History of the club

WHERE WE WERE IN 1972

INAUGURAL MEETING 26TH OCTOBER 1972 AT 8.35pm

The inaugural meeting took place at Broxburn Community Centre, where we still train today, only now it is called the Strathbrock Community Education Centre.

Present

Mr. A Downie, plus Daughter
Mrs. Irene Robson
Mrs. Margaret Sands
Mr. Sam Perrie
Mr. David Lacey
Mr. James McQueen
  Mr. Jim Davidson
Mr. Tom Brash senior
 Mr. Tom Brash junior
Mr. Henry McGowan

One of the major decisions that night was that the first training session was to be held on Thursday 2nd November 1972.The other one was that the two lady members were persuaded to be Secretary and Treasurer, (some things never change)

I wonder if these folk knew or had any vision of what they had started that night.

It was 30 years ago all this took place, so it would be nice to find out the whereabouts of any of the above names.

The Chairperson’s (Mr Sam Perrie) opening speech at the club’s first Annual General Meeting dated 29th March 1973. Consisted of “ he felt sure that with the nucleus of good members that we have here, we have the makings of a first class club.” How right he was, as Broxburn Dog Training Club has competed at and held Obedience shows over the past 30 years. In fact some of Scotland’s top handlers and dogs have passed through the club, (I would not dare try and mention their names in case of forgetting any). These handlers and others will know who and what dogs I am talking about here.

If you know of any please tell us, as we are having a role of honour-thank you--.

We have now started other disciplines within the club i.e. Flyball, Agility, Puppy Classes and Pet dog handling.

The club is still going strong, and is being represented at dog shows the length and breadth of the country.

We as present day committee, would like to think that the members we have today, reflect the same feelings as past members, and with their loyalty and support we can and hopefully will continue to keep Broxburn Dog Training Club as a first class Club.

We would very much like to hear from any of the original or past members or indeed from anyone that can shed some light as to where any of them are, what they are doing and would any one of them like to come back and see what their club is doing now, if for no other reason than just a chat.

It is our intention to start a role of honour. This role being made up of all dogs and handlers that have or will represent our club at open shows – Agility, Flyball or Obedience.

The names and pictures if possible, we would like to come from all and any past members that choose to get in touch with us. We hope to get some adverts out in the local Papers about this scheme, but we will rely mainly on word of mouth. So if you know of any past members of Broxburn Dog Training Club that have represented the Club in any shape or form then please contact either them and tell who ever it is about our scheme, or get in touch with us and we will contact them ourselves if we can find the address or telephone number.

Remember there are 30 years of Broxburn Dog Club to find out so this should be an interesting search.  Any and all little bits of information or anecdotes etc. would be very much appreciated.

SO COME ON ALL YOU LOT, PAST AND PRESENT, MAKE THIS SPACE INTERESTING FOR US

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

Our Agility club is run in conjunction with, and support of our local college, that is OATRIDGE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.

We use their indoor school for our winter training and they graciously allow us the use of a field for our summer training. The facilities are excellent and we really have a wonderful working relationship with the college staff and even the pupils.

Our training format consists of a 10 week Basic Introduction, followed by a further 10 weeks of training that pieces together and compliments the Basic Introduction Course.

After these 20 weeks it is then entirely up to the handler if they wish to go further into the sport by training up for competition level, or stay as a Pet Training member, we feel that there is room for both in our club (after all we all had pets first, agility came second).

Our club welcomes all kinds of dogs i.e. Mini, Midi, Standard. In fact at the this moment in time we have Pointers, Retrievers, Poodles, Spaniels, Jack Russell's, Shelties, Huskies, to mention just a few, and all sorts of mixes, as well as the ever present collies and German shepherds.

The club tends to keep up with all modern methods of dog training as a matter of course. Our Training team attends regular training sessions with other respected trainers, as well as travel the country attending agility shows, and observing how other handlers and dogs are working, we are always open to change, and any new ideas that appear.

We try to keep our training methods positive rather than negative. Our training methods are based on dog and handler and not any specific way, as we feel that there are as many different ways to train, as there are trainers, and between our members and training team, we will always find a way that suits you and your dog. Our club prides itself in being friendly and co-operative with each other. We have a couple of full sets of Agility equipment, all competition standard and do not lack the space to utilise it. Also in use are -: training weaves, collapsible A-frame, training jumps, adjustable dog walks, Tyres (3 types) as well as short tunnels etc.

As a Kennel Club Registered club we hope to compete in team events during the year as well as compete individually at shows.
